#DataccioConnect Dubai - Engaging Digitalisation Discussions, Technology Insights & Supporting Gender Diversity

The #DataccioConnect in Dubai was held on November 21 at Taj, Dubai and was centred around the digitalisation wave in the maritime sector. The event was well attended by various stakeholders and decision makers across the maritime ecosystem. 

HE Mr. Khamis Juma Buamim was the guest of honour and opened the event by explaining how digitalisation has now become essential in the maritime industry. He provided key insights as to how and why the discussion on digitalisation is of utmost importance especially in the economic and political scenario that we are facing today. He offered interesting insights into how the shipping industry is changing rapidly and why it is important to engage in this change.

Thereafter, Capt. Ninad Mhatre, Deputy MD Zeaborn Ship management spoke about the future of the maritime supply chain. He pointed out relevant areas where technology changes are occurring and should occur from the perspective of a ship owner/manager. Capt. Mhatre also stressed on the need to use technology for seafarers, an issue he has always been passionate about. The day delegation was divided into four sessions. 

The first session, organised by WISTA International addressed gender diversity and the importance of inclusion amidst the technology wave. Speakers included Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Director, Sitara Shipping & Founder WISTA India and Jasamin Fichte, Managing Partner, Fichte & Co & Founder WISTA UAE who spoke about WISTA and it’s activities. Thereafter, the panel, that saw participation from WISTA UAE, WISTA India & WISTA Singapore members gave voice to the difficult journey women have had to face to establish themselves as professionals in the maritime sphere. Panelists included Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Director, Sitara Shipping & Founder WISTA India; Jasamin Fichte, Managing Partner, Fichte & Co. & Founder WISTA UAE; Kris Ang, General Manager Asia, Dualog (WISTA Singapore); Ghazalah Moloobhoy, Director, AS Moloobhoy (WISTA India); Effat Mostafa, Managing Editor, Marasi News (WISTA UAE); & was moderated by Priyanka Ann Saini, Head of Media & PR, Proternio Consulting (WISTA India), all with diverse professional and cultural backgrounds highlighted their perspectives on why the conversation on gender diversity is crucial today. Drawing on their unique experiences throughout their professional careers, they spoke about what barriers women need to break down to find a comfortable space in the sector that is still very male dominated. In addition, panelists pointed out why men need to be part of the conversation and why more women need to be encouraged to join the maritime industry. 

The next session, entitled ‘the digital transformers’ saw insightful presentations from players at the forefront of the maritime digitalisation wave. Pawan Sahni, Head of Business Development Middle East, DNV GL, spoke about the future of classification; Duane Hand, Solutions Manager, Speedcast, presented on the advancement in satellite communications; Andrea Giglietti, CSM, Dualog, showcased how technology is bringing ship and shore closer. The last presentation in this session was by Khalil Rehman Aziz, Head of Business Development, MariApps - through a detailed case study of Bernard Schulte, he explained the advent of digitalisation. 

Post a networking lunch, the focus was on blockchain in the ‘Blockchain - a New Hope’ track. Presentations were made by the world’s most renowned blockchain experts and practitioners. Speakers included Saurish Nandi, Co-Founder & CTO, BlocBox; John Monarch, CEO, ShipChain; Vjeran Ortynski, CBDO, CargoX & Liji Nowal, Co-Founder & Managing Director, ODeX. Each speaker presented real use cases of blockchain technology in different aspects of maritime and logistics operations. The session ended with all of the speakers and Grigory Rybalchenko, CEO, BitMeEX Group in a panel discussion that addressed the topic ‘Blockchain - looking beyond the hype’. The panelists addressed questions from the audience about the relevance of blockchain technology and why it is a technology that is causing the most crucial disruptions. 

The last session, entitled ‘Ship Shore Technology’ included presentations by Capt. Mohit Sabharwal, Voyage Manager, Maersk Tankers on the Contract Collaborative Platform and Dhruv Sawhney, Co-Founder & CEO ShipsKart followed by an ‘All Star’ panel discussion on ship shore technology that included industry stalwarts such as Capt. Mohan Naik, Director, Dynacom Tankers Management. Other panelists included speakers from the digital transformers and ship shore technology sessions. This was moderated by Capt. Mhatre and addressed key disruptions that technology is causing in the maritime sphere. It also brought about the urgent need to use technology for the benefit & welfare of seafarers. 

The last segment was the #DataccioConnect Awards that were presented by HE Mr. Khamis Juma Buamim to the following winners:
